Denver Scoops Review - CJ's Frozen Custard
CJ's Frozen Custard Custard Style Homemade CJ's Frozen Custard
Frozen Custard originated in 1919 at Coney Island. It was sold as a carnival treat and quickly grew in popularity. Frozen Custard stands appeared throughout the East Coast and Midwest, especially in the Milwaukee and Chicago land areas. CJ's has brought that same original frozen custard taste to Colorado!
CJ's Frozen Custard was started in 1999 by two neighbors, Cathy Haug and Joy Gunderson. CJ's is not a chain or a franchise, this is the only store (for now). Cathy grew up in Northern Illinois with Frozen Custard. When she and her family were transferred to Colorado they really missed the frozen custard taste and couldn't find it anywhere in the Denver area. Joy recently retired after a long and successful career in the Army and was intrigued by the idea of a premium ice cream in the Denver area. Cathy and Joy got together and went into business together, forming CJ's Frozen Custard. CJ's are the first initials in Cathy and Joy's names.
CJ's isn't your average Mom and Pop store, it's more of a Mom and Son store. Cathy's and Joy's sons work the store along with their moms. The boys, Ryan and Jason, and Steven can be found working in the store along side their moms. This gives CJ's a family atmosphere you won't find anywhere else.
With the Frozen Custard Machine that we use we make frozen custard fresh throughout the day. This keeps our custard fresh as well as creamy and smooth. Frozen custard is served semi-soft at approximately 23 degrees Fahrenheit. This is warmer than normal hard ice creams which are served at zero degrees. Because it is served warmer, your mouth can really taste the richness of the flavors and enjoy the creaminess of the frozen custard.
Frozen Custard is a premium ice cream with 10% butterfat and 1.4% homogenized egg yolk. To this frozen custard base CJ's adds it's own unique flavors and toppings to create a wonderful frozen custard treat with 25-40% less fat than premium ice cream. No additional air is pumped into the frozen custard so it has 70-90% less air than other ice creams, you're getting more real ice cream per bite! Without all the additional air you can taste ice cream like you've never tasted before, you'll never eat regular ice cream again!
